12 Years A Slave – And I Cried

12 Years a Slave

Just saw 12 Years a Slave. I am not a big fan of movies. I spend time and money at the theatre. When I heard about and read this story I wondered about slavery and how bad it really was. Well, for someone who certainly does not cry at the movies I embarrassed myself by allowing tears three time, three times, during the movie. At the end the sniffling just won’t go away.

Scars of a whipped slave (April 2, 1863, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. Original caption: “Overseer Artayou Carrier whipped me. I was two months in bed sore from the whipping. My master come after I was whipped; he discharged the overseer. The very words of poor Peter, taken as he sat for his picture.” (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The brutally, the beatings, the inhuman treatment, the name calling, the deprivation, the rapes, the sale of human souls, the bondage, the shackles, the indignity, the plain suffering of those human beings were torture to watch.

One wonders what thoughts were in the heads of those slave masters who preached a Sunday sermon from the Bible to their slaves. They referred to those human beings as their property. They can do anything, kick them, beat them, hang them, starve them, walk on them, because slaves are property. When I saw those slave masters reading from the Bible I was praying for them to enter Hell right there and then. If there is a God, and a Heaven, and a Hell, then for all the slaves they tortured I hope they roast in Hell.

Yes, I cried for those slaves, and for all the other slaves. Perhaps God will send all slaves to Heaven. I hope so. They certainly suffered in this world. Part II tomorrow.
